Super September!

Here are some of the things our First Graders have been working on during the month of September:

  • Mastering classroom procedures and expectations
  • Practicing what it means to be a “responsible First Grader” with both our EC and SK Buddies
  • Students began bringing Archie the Eagle home! In order to bring Archie the Eagle home, students must demonstrate that they are responsible learners throughout the week. The student picked to bring Archie home must write about their time with Archie in an Adventures with Archie journal! First Graders must include the following in their writing: name, date, title, juicy words and details.
  • FIRST large PuZzLe- Puzzles help develop cognitive skills, problem solving, fine motor skills, hand and eye coordination, and they build social skills
  • Daily 5- Students used Daily 5 to practice reading skills this month! First Graders began with Read to Self and worked on building stamina while reading. They are excited to “book shop” independently for books that are “just right” at an independent level. Students worked hard to “unlock” the Listen to Reading area of Daily 5.
  • Spelling words (Second Grade curriculum) that focus on short vowels. (Sparkle! continues to be a favorite spelling game in First Grade.)
  • Writing legibly, with proper spacing between letters and words
  • Ensuring that sentences start with a capital letter and end with punctuation
  • Singapore Math- Studying ways to add using number bonds, making addition stories, using real-world problems to add, and increasing math vocabulary
  • Johnny Appleseed Day allowed students to practice a variety of skills through different activities. One activity allowed students to locate every state that Johnny Appleseed planted seeds in on the USA map. Students then had to locate the state on their own maps and color the states in! Students also sequenced events within a Johnny Appleseed story independenly.
  • Project- First Graders worked with Second Grade on team building, collaboration, compromising, and problem-solving skills. Students also begun their first PROJECT of the year- Food Pantries and Other Donations!!! First and Second Graders are eager to dive further into Project during the month of October!

Stayed tuned to see how our Project unfolds in October!
