SK update November

Happy November!

The month of October was full of learning and fun in Senior Kindergarten.  We had many special events such as Grandparents’ Day, a visit from the Glendale firefighters, an assembly with a local author and, of course, HALLOWEEN!

In addition to these fun special activities, lots of learning happened in SK.  The Seniors are making HUGE progress on reading. We have now learned over 30 sight words and are using them to write sentences during Writing Workshop.  The Seniors are also learning to stretch out unfamiliar words to write the sounds they hear including beginning, middle and ending sounds. Each Senior also has a “spaceman” to keep in their pencil box.  This helps them to visualize spaces between words when writing sentences. It is amazing to see the growth in sounding words out and spelling words in just the first 50 days of Senior Kindergarten!

We have now completed 4 chapters in Math in Focus.  The Seniors can compare shapes, sizes and weights to measure objects.  We also continue to work on the foundation of addition and subtraction, learning that a bigger number can be broken into two smaller numbers.  We have also completed many Halloween themed math centers such as measuring pumpkins, patterning green and orange pumpkins and building pumpkin stems to match a given number.

The SK class continues to make progress on our Project, as well.  During the next month, we are looking forward to visit by many community helper experts including a Coast Guard member, police officer and postal worker!

It’s been a busy month in SK with many more exciting happenings as we enter the holiday season!
