SK update 2.1

Although we spent many cold January days stuck inside for recess, it has been an active month in Senior Kindergarten!

The Seniors’ reading is taking off!  We have learned more than 60 sight words and are eager to learn more and more!  In fact, we tried to take a break to just review words during a short three day week.  However, the Seniors INSISTED we learn four new words in those short days!  The Seniors are also more confident to sound out unfamiliar words including blends and compound words.  This leads to writing longer sentences and including more sounds when “stretching out” words while writing books during writing workshop.

Math this month included learning about solid and flat shapes.  We studied three-dimensional shapes such as the sphere, cube, cylinder and cone.  We counted faces and edges on these shapes while comparing them to circles, squares, rectangles and triangles.  The next Math unit focused on numbers to 100.  The Seniors are working on identifying double-digit numbers and counting by 2s, 5s and 10s.  This knowledge of counting is helping us prepare for the 100th day of school coming very soon!

We also began a cultural study of the country of Peru this month with the Junior Kindergarten.  Through various projects, stories and videos, we have learned about the climate, geography, people and culture of this South American country.  We even tasted foods popular in Peru such as sweet potatoes, avocados, tortillas and beans.  Finally, we sampled cookies and candy brought to us straight from Peru from Mrs. Comesana’s family!

We are excited for the fun events of February including Fathers’ Breakfast, the 100th day of school and Valentine’s Day!  Lots to look forward to in Senior Kindergarten!

Sincerely,

Kristen Masiel
