Physical Education Update

Rohan Woods School Physical Education and Athletics

What’s the weather doing? That’s the question of the day in late autumn. If the weather is good we will be out on the field, either playing flag football or team handball. Some days you can see us on the playground running a parkour. Students love to build their American Ninja-Warrior style obstacle courses that require speed, agility, climbing, crawling and leaping skills. A few passes through the parkour is an excellent work out!

If the weather moves us indoors, we’re working on the passing, catching, bouncing and dribbling skills needed for team handball. Students are challenged to use the spacing and communication skills we practiced in soccer season, along with the throwing and catching skills of flag football. Add the dribbling and defensive play we’ll need for basketball season, and team handball makes the perfect transitional sport.

Our preschool students are busy building indoor games and challenges by composing original stories. Students work to develop scenarios by providing story elements: characters, setting, plot/problem, solution. We construct the scenarios using mats, beams, cones, tunnels, blocks, and everything else we can get our hands on. And then, our stories come alive! Popular themes often require specially built ‘cities’ and ‘playgrounds’ to be used both on foot and on scooters.

Lunch League (grades 3-6):  Our intramural program is lead by Sixth Grade captains, and all Third through Sixth Graders are invited to play during recess. Captains select teams, manage players and lead their teams on the field. Players enjoy the camaraderie of students in other grades as they learn the fine arts of sportsmanship, leadership and competition. We play soccer, flag football, team handball, floor hockey, basketball, volleyball and baseball. We are currently finishing up flag football season. Playoffs begin November 9th. Team handball sign-up begins November 10th. Rosters and schedules are posted in the Great Hall. Congratulations to our Soccer Champions: ‘Lil Man Wesley and Llama Tribe’ captained by 6th graders Jack and Dennis.

Athletics Program (grades 3-6):  Our after school Inter-Scholastic Athletics Program is an opportunity for our students to showcase the skills they’ve developed in class during games, meets and tournaments. Several St. Louis Independent Schools compete with us in soccer, flag football, floor hockey, basketball, track and field. Children who would like to participate are encouraged to give their best in competition, guided by sportsmanship and the love of play. RWS Eagles learn how to accept winning and losing and to appreciate the joy of an afternoon with family and friends cheering us on!
