The month of February was busy, fast and fun in Junior Kindergarten! We celebrated Father’s Breakfast, the 100th day of school and Valentine’s Day, as well as started a unit learning about the USA.
In Language Arts, the Juniors finished the unit about Shadows and began Finding Friends. So far in this unit, we discussed compound words, letter order in words and read two stories about how to find a friend. The first story, called Big Al, was about a fish who looks scary so the other fish were afraid to be his friend. In the end, he saves the little fish from being caught in a net. We discussed how helping a friend is a way to find new friends. The second story, Ginger, was about a cat and a new kitten. At first, the two do not get along at all. Eventually, the cats learn to like each other as Ginger realizes the kitten is not trying to be naughty, just playful. The Juniors enjoyed comparing the two cats and making predictions about whether they would be friends at the end. Finally, we have learned to create compound words and how the order of letters in a word is crucial to the meaning of the word.
Math activities this month centered around the 100th day of school. The Juniors had been waiting all year to get to this monumental number. Every day we counted straws in the tens and ones columns and finally, we added a bundle of 100 straws to the hundreds pouch. Other favorite activities included hunting of 100 Hershey’s kisses to put on a 100s chart, counting 100 fruit loops to make a necklace and making 100th day crowns.
It sure was a busy month!
Sincerely,
Kristen Masiel
