Fourth Grade Update

On Tuesday the Fourth Graders participated in a variety of special art activities in Fine Arts Day arranged by Mrs. Burkert, our art specialist.  They made personalized cards using stamping techniques, engaged in a ceramics demonstration as they learned more about how to create personality in a clay figure, and experienced the music of local artist Erin Bode. The day culminated with the MADCO production of Escape from Mr. Lemoncello’s Library.  All Fourth, Fifth, and Sixth Graders joined with the MADCO dancers to present this dance interpretation of the novel. Congratulations to all students on a wonderful performance.

Our literature book this month is Freak the Mighty by Rodman Philbrick.  This is a brilliant, emotionally charged novel about two boys. One is a slow learner, too large for his age, and the other is a tiny, disabled genius. The two pair up to create one formidable human force known as "Freak the Mighty". Class discussion focuses on the major themes of family, friendship, courage, and appearances vs. reality.  As the action of the novel unfolds, the students work to share their conclusions and interpret the author’s inferences. Our class notes will then contribute to a final writing project later this month.

Friday, May 6th was our annual Mothers' Breakfast. Thank you to all of our mothers for joining us to celebrate this special day!
