Our math lessons have focused on multiplying fractions and mixed numbers. Being able to recognize relationships between numbers and apply multiplication and division facts to these number relationships helps students work through the problems. A pictorial representation and a bar model diagram bar provide the students with support and explanation of the number relationships. The Fourth Graders are practicing many different concepts related to fractions which allow them to apply their knowledge of multiplication and division facts.
Our new literature book is Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes by Eleanor Coerr. The Fourth Graders are learning about how an author develops a character through the descriptions which are provided as well as the actions and thoughts of all the characters in a novel. Students will be applying their understanding of character development as our writing lessons focus on character sketches.
This week our writing lessons provided practice on how-to paragraphs. Students created pre-writing notes and then created how-to paragraphs including important components of transitions and selective language to add more detail and description to their work.
Ancient Greece is our social studies topic this month. Students have been studying the geography of Greece and its surrounding countries to better understand how geography affected the development of this ancient culture.
