Students have been very busy in science class at Rohan Woods….

JK

  • Read Kitchen Chemistry Kal and made ice cream to observe (and taste!) a chemical reaction
  • Read Lindy Light and created shadow puppets to experiment with light
  • Learned about the most common birds around Rohan Woods and went outside to bird watch and count number/kind sightings as part of the "Great Backyard Bird Count"

SK

  • Experimented with forces and motion including pushes and pulls
  • Experimented to see whether the slope of a ramp will cause an object to travel farther/less far

1st

  • Completed soil scroll/visual representation of the layers of soil and the animals that live in them
  • Studied animal life cycles and acted out the life cycle of a honeybee

  • Discussed toys that you have to pull to get to push and experimented with catapults

2nd

  • Worked in the native prairie habitat
  • Went on field trip to the zoo to study/observe/photograph/video the animals they have studied for their biome project
  • Worked on creating their biome iMovies on the iPad

3rd

  • Continued to work on land and water interactions in their stream tables
  • Experimented with rushing rivers and flow, how land changes the direction and flow of water, and how dams work

4th

  • Continued to work with the "Scratch" computer coding program from MIT
  • Created programs using only 10 different commands, a program that was about themselves called "All About Me", and worked to problem solve and trouble shoot different bugs in different programs
  • Worked to raise money for their fall 2017 trip by putting on "Movie Night" for Grades EC-3rd 
  • Learned about the most common birds around Rohan Woods and went outside to bird watch and count number/kind sightings as part of the "Great Backyard Bird Count"

Middle School

  • Started unit on simple machines
  • Learned about and experimented with kinetic and potential energy, energy transfer, the law of conservation of energy, and friction
  • Worked to raise money for their fall 2017 trip by putting on "Movie Night" for Grades EC-3rd 
  • Learned about the most common birds around Rohan Woods and went outside to bird watch and count number/kind sightings as part of the "Great Backyard Bird Count"

Middle School Health

  • Worked on learning the nutrients our body needs and what they do for us

Garden

  • 2nd Grade put down cardboard and mulch to kill the grass for the addition to the native prairie
  • 2nd Grade did a "seed stomp" to add plants to our existing native prairie
  • 2nd Grade winterized seeds collected from the Litzsinger Road Ecology Center
