During the next month, the Juniors and Seniors will be introduced to the art of the Impressionists and Post-Impressionists. They will view works-of-art by Monet, Seurat, Renoir, Cassatt, Degas and Van Gogh. With careful observation, they will explore and discuss what they like about the Impressionistic style.
-First Graders will journey to China to learn the traditions and customs associated with Chinese New Year. They will construct very large Dragons that will be part of our Chinese New Year Parade on Thursday, February 7th at 2:30. The classes are encouraged to wear RED that day (RED symbolizes good luck) and be prepared for a festive celebration!
-Second Grade will complete their African masks and move into their unit on winter landscapes. Students will observe the variety of trees outside the large art room windows. They will learn vocabulary associated with landscapes and apply various chalk and oil pastel techniques. (continued)
-Third/Fourth Graders will complete their Native American Dream catchers and begin a unit focusing on three-dimensional art. Manipulating clay, the students will sculpt Oaxaca style animals inspired from traditional woodcarvings from Mexico.
-Fifth Graders are beginning their Hopi Kachina unit. Students are in the planning and sketching stage. Once they have decided on the type of Kachina and lesson it will teach, they will use creative writing skills to create a story unique to their Kachina. Working three dimensionally, Fifth Graders will sculpt clay to bring their visions to life. Once complete, they look forward to presenting their stories and Kachinas to the students and faculty at Rohan Woods.
-During the month of January, the Sixth Graders will begin their digital presentations for their artist of choice “Ceiling Tile” project. This month-long unit will involve research, written documentation, oral presentation and a unique reproduction of art from their selected artist.

“How important are the visual arts in our society? I feel strongly that the visual arts are of vast and incalculable importance. Of course I could be prejudice. I am visual art.”
