April 2017

Students have been very busy in science class at Rohan Woods….

JK

  • Read Quirkles books Pressure Pete and Quincy Quake to learn about air pressure and earthquakes
  • Observed and learned about the honeybees in our observation bee hive
  • Helped put soil in the garden beds and planted watermelon seeds

SK

  • Researched to find what color their planet is and painted their paper mache planet the correct color
  • Learned the difference between a planet and a star
  • Observed and learned about the honeybees in our observation bee hive
  • Helped put soil in the garden beds and planted corn

1st

  • Investigated friction, levers, and inclined planes using hands on experiments
  • Observed and learned about the honeybees in our observation bee hive
  • Helped put soil in the garden beds

2nd

  • Investigated the adaptations of the flora and fauna in the tundra, desert, and rainforest biomes
  • Observed and learned about the honeybees in our observation bee hive
  • Helped put soil in the garden beds and planted zinnia seeds

3rd

  • Started unit on circuits/electricity
  • Investigated conductors and insulators
  • Created a working circuit that lights a light bulb
  • Observed and learned about the honeybees in our observation bee hive
  • Helped put soil in the garden beds and planted green bean seeds

4th

  • Started unit on ecosystems
  • Build "ecocolumns" that include a terrarium and an aquarium to study the ecosystem this creates
  • Added live animals and plants to ecocolumn
  • Observed and learned about the honeybees in our observation bee hive
  • Helped put soil in the garden beds

Middle School

  • Continued simple machines unit
  • Constructed mousetrap powered cars, raced cars, and completed a mini lab report on the experiment
  • Learned about the screw and used it to build a compost bin for the school
  • Observed and learned about the honeybees in our observation bee hive
  • Helped put soil in the garden beds and planted sunflower seeds

Middle School Health

  • Started unit on the endocrine and reproductive systems

Garden

  • Prepared raised garden beds with a soil mix of topsoil, humus, and peat
  • Planted green beans, watermelon, pumpkins, corn, zucchini, zinnia's, nasturtium, sunflowers, peas, and morning glory seeds
  • Added onto the prairie garden by laying down cardboard and mulch to begin the process of killing the grass in the prairie addition area

Observation Honeybee Hive

  • Installed an observation bee hive in the science lab
  • Added a colony of approximately 15,000 bees into the hive
  • Bees are currently doing the following: capping honey cells, capping brood cells, queen laying eggs, larvae growing, pollen and nectar stored in cells
